Honda and Toyota head gasket repair cost

Two of the most reliable engine families in the world. When their head gaskets do fail, the repair is usually straightforward and the cost is moderate. Here are the model-specific numbers.

Context

Why these failures are usually fixable

Honda and Toyota head gasket failures are far less common than Subaru, but they do happen, mostly due to overheating events (failed thermostat, broken water pump, stuck radiator fan) rather than gasket-material defects. Because the engines are otherwise robust, these cars are almost always worth fixing if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape.

Failure patterns

Older engines that are known for it

  • HONDA D-SERIES

1.5L and 1.6L engines from the 1990s. Single overhead cam, well over a million miles on some examples. Head gasket failures usually trace back to a stuck thermostat or worn radiator.

  • HONDA J-SERIES V6

Found in older Accord, Pilot, Odyssey. Reliable but the rear bank is tight, which adds an hour or two of labor when the gasket does fail.

  • TOYOTA 3VZE V6

1990s 4Runner and Pickup. Famous for head gasket failure between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Toyota issued a TSB and many were replaced under warranty.

  • TOYOTA 22R-E

1980s and early 1990s 4-cyl. Bulletproof in most respects but the head gasket eventually goes. Very cheap to fix on these because the engine is simple.

Parts choice

OEM vs aftermarket gaskets

OEM (Honda or Toyota)

$80 - $200

Genuine factory part. Multi-layer steel. Best longevity match. Almost always worth the extra cost.

Aftermarket premium (Felpro, Ishino, Stone)

$50 - $120

Same multi-layer steel construction. Indistinguishable in service. The mechanic's typical default.

Aftermarket budget (no-name eBay)

$15 - $40

Avoid. Often single-layer or off-spec. The labor is the expensive part. Saving $40 on the gasket and redoing the job is a $1,500 mistake.

Ask your mechanic which gasket they use. Premium aftermarket from a named manufacturer is fine. No-name budget gaskets are not, and a shop that uses them is signaling cost-cutting on the rest of the job too.
